Launch of the book 500 Sardinhas (500 Sardines)

July 1, 2013

On the 26th of June, the INCM and the EGEAC launched the book 500 Sardinhas (500 sardines), a special edition to mark the 10th anniversary of the sardine as an icon of Lisbon’s Feast Days of the Popular Saints, which bring together a selection of 500 creations, including the ten winners of the competition held this year.

The work was launched in the Millenium Gallery - Millenium BCP Foundation, located at Rua Augusta, where most of the original designs featured in this edition can be admired by the general public until the 24th of August at the A Sardinha é de Todos (Sardines Belong to Everyone) exhibition.

Representing the INCM at the launch of the work was António Osório, along with Miguel Honrado, on behalf of the EGEAC, and Fernando Nogueira, for the Millenium BCP Foundation. Also present was Jorge Silva, from the Silvadesigners studio, responsible for the creative direction of the competition which, since 2010, has been picking the most imaginative sardines.

The sardine first appeared in 2003 as the brand image of the Lisbon's Feast Days and was the result of a collaboration between EGEAC and the Silvadesigners studio, under the artistic direction of Jorge Silva. Since then it has become a design phenomenon, reinvented nowadays by many artists.

The first international sardine image design competition was held in 2010, followed by two further editions. The 2013 competition had more than six thousand entries by artists of different nationalities, from which ten winners were picked.
