"Colecção D. Luís" numismatic exhibition

October 31, 2013

The second part of the "Colecção D. Luís" (D. Luís Collection) numismatic exhibition was inaugurated yesterday. This numismatic collection is considered as the largest and most important in the country, with coins from between the 4th century BC and the 19th century, and it will be on show in the atrium of the Casa da Moeda and the Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa Palace until the 31st of January next year.

This time, the coins that were on exhibition almost a year ago have changed place - the Greek-Roman, Swabian, Visigothic and Moorish coins will be on display at the Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa Palace, and the Portuguese coins minted between the reigns of Afonso Henriques and Pedro V, in the atrium of the Casa da Moeda.

During the inauguration ceremony at the Casa da Moeda, António Osório, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office (INCM), and Vasco Nunes da Silva, member of the Board of Directors of the Casa de Bragança Foundation, underlined the success of the partnership established between the two entities, an opinion that was also shared at Vila Viçosa by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Chairman of the Casa de Bragança Foundation, who stated that the exhibition "is the result of a very satisfying partnership between the institutions".

Also present at the inauguration were the other members of the INCM's Board of Directors, Maria Luísa Pacheco and Rodrigo Brum, who highlighted the "importance, the beauty and the rarity of the coins on show, some of which are unique examples", which visitors can enjoy on guided tours around the two exhibition centres, led by the specialists Javier Salgado, at the Casa da Moeda, and Godinho de Miranda, at Vila Viçosa.

Among the rarities are found two Visigothic trientes, one from Egitânia (Idanha-a-Velha) and the other from Veseo (Viseu), and the João V 24 escudo dubloon. These coins can be admired at the Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa Palace on Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., from Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and at the weekends from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and in the atrium of the Casa da Moeda, from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On 12 and 19 December and on 14 and 28 January, shall be held guided tours to the numismatic exhibition "Colecção D. Luís", for groups up to 10 individuals and by appointment, with one week in advance, by e-mail antonia.chora@incm.pt
