The commemorative collector coin of the 100 years of the Espadarte - the first Portuguese submarine - was presented today at Lisbon’s Naval Base, in Alfeite.

The presentation ceremony was presided by capitão-de-fragata Mário Silva Gouveia, who is also the commander of the submarine squadron, and by Rodrigo Brum, member of INCM's Board of Directors. The ceremony was attended by several civil and military personalities, namely vice-admiral, José Montenegro, a naval commander, and Maria Luísa Pacheco, member of INCM's Board of Directors.

The NRP Espadarte was commissioned in 1907, during the reign of King Charles I and was built at La Spezia shipyards, in Italy. On April 15, 1913, it was delivered to the Portuguese Navy, making it one of the first in the world to be equipped with this type of weapons platform.

The coin which celebrates the centenary of the NRP Espadarte, by José Bandeira and Delgado Nunes, has an issue of 2500 copies in silver with proof finishing, packaged in a case with a guarantee certificate, and of 100,000 copies in cupronickel with normal finishing.
