Presentation of the commemorative coin entitled "40 Years of the Ombudsman"

December 10, 2015

The commemorative collector coin "40 Years of the Ombudsman", created by plastic artist José de Guimarães, was yesterday officially presented to the public.

The presentation ceremony took place in the Altis Hotel, in Lisbon, and was attended by the Ombudsman, José de Faria Costa, the Chairman of the INCM Board of Directors, Rui Carp, and the artist, José de Guimarães.

Created on 21 April 1975, the Ombudsman is an independent state body, made up of a single irremovable person enshrined in the Constitution, whose mission is to defend and promote citizen rights, liberties and guarantees, respect for human rights and the legality of exercising political powers.

To mark this milestone in Portugal's democratic history, INCM has minted a commemorative collector coin with a face value of 2.50 euros, in a limited edition of 75,000 cupronickel coins with a normal finishing, and 2,500 silver coins with a proof finishing.

The silver coin also has the unusual feature of several colours on both faces, bringing together the aesthetics of José de Guimarães with INCM's technical know-how to place greater emphasis on the universal human values behind the creation of the Ombudsman.
