Elvira Fortunato’s research team clinches the INCM Innovation Prize

December 6, 2016

The team coordinated by researcher Elvira Fortunato, from UNL (Lisbon’s Nova University) has won the INCM Innovation Prize, guaranteeing funding for the project entitled “Secret Paper - an innovative and low cost approach”, and a cash prize of ten thousand euros.

With the aim of developing electronic systems using embedded technology implemented in paper, aimed at increasing the traceability and security of documents - specifically identification and travel documents, among other types, this project is in line with INCM’s objectives. By creating this prize, INCM aims to reward innovative ideas that make it possible for the company to create new products and services that could form part of what it offers to the market.

The winning team, the UNL Faculty of Science and Technology, is made up of Elvira Fortunato, Rodrigo Martins, Luís Pereira and Pedro Branquinha from the Materials Research Centre (CENIMAT/CEMOP), and João Goes and João Pedro Oliveira from the Technology and Systems Centre at the UNINOVA Institute.

Another idea whose development will be financed, with an award of five thousand euros, is the “minting of completely or partially transparent coins”, presented by Paulo Martins from the IST's (Higher Technical Institute) Mechanical Engineering Department.

The panel also decided to award a mention of honour to the idea entitled “decreasing the colonisation of bacteria in metal coins”, by a team made up of researchers Carla Carvalho, from the IST’s Bioengineering and Bioscience Department, Maria José Caramujo, from the Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Alterations Centre at the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Sciences, and Telmo Santos, from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at UNL.

The prizes were announced and awarded today by the Minister for the Office of the President and Administrative Modernisation, Maria Manuel Leitão Marques, who gave the closing speech at the ceremony.
